“Every time I close my eyes, I see zombies,” the three-year-old said. Her tired eyes stared, pleading into my soul. With two older brothers, I’m not shocked, but it was after midnight. “Tell me a spooky story about zombies,” she asked.

That’s the last thing she needed, but I began, “Once upon a time there was a little zombie who was afraid. He was scared of people and also tried to hide from other zombies. One day, another little zombie girl found him and asked, “Why are you hiding?  Why are you afraid?”

“But, Miss Sue, zombies can’t talk,” my audience interrupted. This tot must be going on twelve, because she knows the rules for zombie lore, I thought.

Because of her remark, I’ve discovered the zombies in my world are those with whom I can’t talk. They won’t listen. No matter what words fall from my lips, they believe I’m wrong with malicious intent. Anything I say, that does not conform to what they believe, they will not hear. They will not discuss and agree to differ. I found out that zombies do speak and say, “brains…brains…brains,” because they want mine. Anger seeps from them, so I hide.

Everyone knows the best way to survive a zombie attack is avoidance. If you stay with them, your brain is consumed with rage too. Suspicion and fear rule your world. Anyone different becomes your adversary. Nothing ever changes for the better; you descend ever deeper into a dark, fearful world. The only comfort is going after others to join in the misery and taking someone else’s brain to the same horrible place where yours is. Before you’re certain our whole world has suffered a zombie apocalypse, I offer hope. It started with my three-year-old friend.

Lord, what can I do to help my dear one who sees zombies?

“Dear Heart, let’s ask God for help, so you can go to sleep and not see the zombies.” We asked Jesus to send the zombies away and give her sweet dreams. “When we close our eyes, please, may we see the beauty you see, Lord?”  A short time later, she fell asleep and slept well.

Under attack by zombies? Were they once friends or family members? Do you avoid them because they want you to be filled with the same anger and fear their brains hold?

Ask God to show you what He sees when he looks at them. He will give you a way to communicate love and kindness. That way, you won’t see zombies anymore.

Romans 12:2 NKJV  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
